On Saturday August 23, 1958 at 7:20pm thirty-two boxcars left their tracks and left an imprint on everyone’s memory.  There they lay, above the underpass, teetering on the edge of not only concrete, but also on the edge of what had once been the railroads innocent presence in town.  The cars stopped just inches from the icehouse, which contained compressed ammonia.  Had the train gone just a little farther, the outcome would have been much different.  As we look back on this momentous day, we have to appreciate that there were no fatalities involved.  It is simply a bookmark on the town’s long history with the railroad.  Many of the landmarks that can be seen in “The Great Train Wreck” no longer exist.  The old underpass has been replaced with a new one.  The icehouse and train depot are long gone and as painting continued on “The Great Train Wreck” the Farmers Warehouse was saying its final goodbye.
